The Bekeris family
Growing up in Lithuania, it was our dream to one day own a vineyard and winery. In 2001, we moved to America in pursuit of better opportunities, our dream always at the forefront of our mind. After 6 years of searching all over California, we finally found the rolling hills of Amador County in the Sierra Foothills falling in love with the rich Zinfandels and other diverse wines produced there. It was here that MaBeRa was born.
Wine has been deeply rooted in our family for generations, so it was only fitting that the winery be named after family:
[Ma] – Mario and Matas, Father and Son
[Be] – Bekeris, our family name
[Ra] – Ramona, Mom
Our 10-planted acre estate is tucked away just off the main road in the Sierra Foothills of Amador County, otherwise known as “the Shenandoah Valley.”
We grow Zinfandel, Barbera, Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Mourvedré, Touriga Nacional and Souzao.
The signature vineyard on the property is two acres of 40-year old Zinfandel that was hand-planted by the original owner. It is important to us that we stay connected to the history of the property, so this vineyard is dry-farmed ensuring the necessary stress on the vines to create rich and deeply complex wines. Additionally, it is always harvested by hand.
Managed by David Carlson, of Twin Rivers, we strive for sustainable vineyard practices and it is our goal that all our vineyards are eventually dry-farmed.
Guided by artisan winemaker, Jonathan Pack, MaBeRa is a 1,000 case, boutique winery producing premium, small-lot, 100% varietal wines from our estate vineyards. It is our goal to always stay true to the terroir of the Sierra Foothills while developing a diverse lineup with a wine for every palate.
